Grammar Activity - Prepositions TESL 0110

Grammar Activity - Prepositions of Movement

The context for my activity is a classroom of about 16 teenaged students participating in a school based, government funded ESL classroom.  They are CLB 5, IELT 4 and all between ages 13 and 18.  In doing some research, I found this great idea for a game that incorporated grammar teaching of prepositions into a scavenger hunt.  I love this idea as it gets these teenagers moving and can be done in groups.

The activity focuses on prepositions of movement.  I've adapted it for application in  the school environment. For a description of this activity, please find the link below.

Scavenger Hunt

Prepositions of Movement:  along, through, across, into/out of, onto/off, up/down, over/under, toward/away, back to

Split the class into groups of 4.  Provide each of the groups with a handout that contains 10 clues.  Instruct the students to read the clues together and fun together.  Once the students solve and arrive at the point, have them take a picture there..

When the students return to class the next day, have the groups show their pictures and use the prepositions of movement to describe each picture. ie:  As we walked towards the play structure and climbed up the blue ladder.

I found descriptions for movement prepositions here.
