Teaching Tina - the /sh/ vs /s/ sounds- Feedback Script #TESL0120

In the Speaking Sample #3, Tina had difficulty pronouncing the /sh/ sound in the word shopping.  The following is a script I've written to describe how I might give some teaching instruction for this error.

Teacher:  So, Tina, I've noticed that in your english speaking, you tend to make an error with the /sh/ sound.  Like in the word shopping, instead of hearing the /sh/ sound, I instead hear the /s/ sound.

Tina: Oh. Ok. I was no aware of this.

Teacher:  That's ok.  Lets do an activity that will help us form the sound /sh/. Is that ok?

Tina: Yes.

Teacher:  Ok great.  Firstly, can you hear the difference between the /sh/ sound like in the word ship and the /s/ sound as in the work sip?

Tina:  yes

Teacher:  That's great.  To make the /sh/ sound, you need to relax your jaw a bit and bring the blade of your tongue to the top of your mouth.  Like this. (model this mouth position)  Then, push the air out of your mouth around the sides of your tongue.  Let's try it.

Tina: [guttural sound]

Teacher:  ok, good try.  Let's try and bring the sound closer to the front of your mouth.  The air needs to leave your mouth through and around your teeth.  You can also place a hand over your throat and make sure you don't feel any vibration.

Tina:  ( /sh/)

Teacher: Much better!  Let's try this sound in a sentence using the word shopping.

Tina:  I like to go shopping.

Teacher:  great!  Keep practicing this sound using other words.
